Check below for a few of my choices for the beginning of the year.
I always start out my year with working on positive self-esteem. I feel that it is important for the children to see themselves as special and I choose books that go with that theme.
I love using this book to help kids feel good about themselves and their special names. Many kids today have names that may seem unusual, or perhaps very common, to others. This can sometimes lead to teasing or feeling less important. After reading this book, we talk about how everyone is special.
This is the perfect book for teaching that it is okay to like to do things or have things that are necessarily the same as those around us. It is funny and the kids love to see what is going to happen next. It is a great springboard for discussions afterwards.
I love the Howard B. Wigglebottom books. They are fun to read and they have great messages. I like to use the animated books for this. The We Do Listen Foundation has the animated stories and several activities to go along with them.
